The MP3 Player Industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
The MP3 Player Industry - Essay Example Second, the industry has been dominated by Apple because the company garners from 65 to 80 percent of the market share. Third, technological leadership appears to be a major determinant of who leads in the industry. Marino pointed out that ââ¬Å"MP3 player manufacturers were continuously working to develop players that were physically smaller, with larger storage capacity, a longer batter life, and a simpler user interfaceâ⬠(p. 2). Fourth, electronic devices have been converging. As pointed out by Marino, ââ¬Å" combinations of cameras, MP3s, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and even cell phones were becoming abundantly popularâ⬠(p. 3). This means that even the MP3 player industry can disappear with the emergence of a product the combines the cellular phone, MP3 player, camera and personal digital assistants. In view of this, it can be asserted that the basic competition in the MP3 player industry is a fast, seamless, efficient and excellent transformation of each MP 3 player firm into a firm producing a product that integrates the features of a camera, cellular phone, MP3 player, personal digital assistant and other electronic equipment into a single device. For instance, one device that has been integrated recently into such a device is the GPS locator or the device that identifies oneââ¬â¢s exact location on earth in terms of latitude and longitude. Varian (2010, p. 523) defines a dominant strategy as the ââ¬Å"one optimal choice of strategy for each player no matter what the other player does.â⬠Varian (2010, p. 523) elaborated that ââ¬Å"if there is a dominant strategy for each player in some game, then we would predict that it would be the equilibrium outcome of the game.â⬠Varian (2010, p. 536) said ââ¬Å"a dominant strategy equilibrium is a set of choices for which each playerââ¬â¢s choices are optimal regardless of what the other players choose.â⬠Similar with the Varian (2010) definition, a popular definition of dominant strategy is by Michael Shor. According to Shor (2006a), ââ¬Å"A strategy is dominant if, regardless of what any players do, the strategy earns a larger payoff than any other. Hence, a strategy is dominant if it always better than any other strategy, for any profile of other players actions. Depending on whether ââ¬Å"betterâ⬠is defined with weak or strict inequalities, the strategy is termed strictly dominant or weakly dominant. If one strategy is dominant, then all others are dominated.â⬠In general, the dominant strategy can be a Nash equilibrium. According to Shor (2006b), Nash equilibrium ââ¬Å"is a set of strategies, one for each player, such that no player has incentive to unilaterally change her action.â⬠Among several possible dominant strategies, a Nash equilibrium is one possible dominant strategy in the MP3 Player industry. 2. 5 Forces of the music player industry and which one is the strongest? The idea of five forces shaping the industry cam e from Porter (1985). According to Porter (1985, p. 5), the five forces any industry are rivalry among firms, bargaining power of buyers, threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers and threat of substitute products or services. Like in any other industry, the same five forces are shaping the MP3 player industry although Hunger and Wheelen (2011) has identified a sixth which consists of the other stakeholders. According to Hunger and Wheelen (2011), these other stakeholders include governments, local communities and groups that can influence

Efficient Market Essay Example for Free
Efficient Market Essay Q1. Efficient market is one in which stock prices fully reflect the information of a company, either positive or negative. If the information from a company is positive, investor will give a good response and the price of shares of this company will increase. Since the information is reflected in price at once, normal rate of return should only be obtained. Also the price that the firm received from issuing securities is the present value, and valuable financing opportunities are unavailable. There are three conditions that will cause market efficiency, which are the rationality of investors, dependent deviations from rationality and arbitrage. Three forms are divided by researcher according to the availability of information. The first one is Weak Form. The price in this form were just focused the past stock price. This is the cheapest, easiest strategy to find the pattern in stock price. But the future information is random due to random walk hypothesis therefore it is unable to generate any profit. The Semistrong Form will appear when all information is publicly available, including the historical price information. The price should rise at once when the news release and no chance for profit when the investor analysis the information. The Strong Form appears in which the price reflects all information publicly or privately on market. Secret news or insiderââ¬â¢s news is useless for investors to earn profit in this form. Arbitrage will generates profit from the rationally purchase and sale of similar stocks in market in order to make the profit riskless. The rationally decision is included estimate the business rationally and methodically. So in Weak Form just need to obtain the historical stock information is enough for knowing the different of price. But financial statement, economic and politic situation is needed to consider in order to obtain the arbitrage in Semistrong Form. And some private information like the purchase of resources or amalgamations of firms are needed for understands in order to obtain arbitrage in Strong Form. Q2. Below are the advantage and disadvantage of different investment rules. Net Present Value is used to calculate the net change in companyââ¬â¢s asset with respect to a project after considering the time value of money. So company can base on the result to make the decision, where positive NPV should accept the project. The advantage of NPV is accurate to obtain the best decision since it can fairly rank different projects and classify them by their size and duration. Because NPV consider and apply cash flow and discount rate, difficult to estimate and full of uncertainty of these two elements will be the disadvantage of NPV. Payback period is used to make decision by comparing break-even point that the project can payback within a predetermined cutoff. The advantage of it is simple and directly analysis. Also, it is useful for short-term project that cash management is the first priority since it payback mainly focus on liquidity of the project. The disadvantage is payback ignore time value of money and the cash flow after cutoff period, so some cost may neglected and cause an inaccurate result. Discounted Payback Period will convert the cash flow as the present value and compare the discounted break-even point that the project can discounted cash flows payback within a predetermined cutoff. Since the calculating is similar with Payback so they share their advantage and disadvantage. Since the time value of money is considered so result can be more accurate, but it also specified the discount rate so the analysis will become more complicated. Internal Rate of Return is the discount rate that NPV become zero. It will accept the project that has a greater discount rate compare to IRR. It is usually used because it is easy for manager to find out the rate of return. But it is no accurate when the project have some non-normal cash flow or when evaluating mutually exclusive projects. Finally, Profitability index is used to measure profitability among different projects. It obtains present value by discounting the cash flow. With formula: benefit/cost ratio, profit of all positive NPV project can be ranked properly. Therefore it is useful for manager to rank and select suitable projects through the list. But discount rate is difficult to calculate because it is very uncertain. And profitability index will be broken down by other resource constraints. In conclusion, there are similarities between some investment rules. NPV, IRR and PI consider the time value of money while the left rules do not. Although it is more complicated when computing with discount rate, the more accurate and detailed result can be work out so it is worth to do so, just like the rules discounted payback period and payback period. Moreover, IRR can give the accurate result to manager quickly, but it may affect by the non-normal cash flow. Therefore using NPV may be the right choice of rules to evaluating mutually exclusive projects. As a result, managers should choose different rules for particular situations.

Ford automobile company will maintain good relation with the employees by offering better work environment and competitive wages that are assert to recruits a qualified and skilled employee in all its functions. Otherwise, Ford is more concerned about the working environment and safety aspects of the employees. Furthermore, Ford always develops cars on standardized procedure and invested heavily in alternate fuel source. This manufacturing facilities operating its business more than thirty countries and enhances its manufacturing process at around ninety plants and facilities worldwide that is because operations and distribution efficiency of the Ford automobile company is the wealth. Weaknesses Weaknesses mean any limitations that a company faces in developing or implementing a marketing strategy. Fords automobile company brand image was harmed and the company has a lot of suffered due to products recalls. For example the Ford Focus recalls the car which has some problem. This has made a large cost to the company as well as harm the brand image and make a bad impact to Fords sales. Furthermore, Ford automobile company lack of design phase and innovative design structures on their new paddle of cars. This is because the technology not as well as other it will influence Ford to cause the low productivity. Thus Ford can overcome their weakness to achieve greatest of strengths. Apart of that, management is missing focus on some lines performance because Ford automobile company expands more business operations in diversified geographical areas. Next, Ford does not have an effective cost management system and have not taken considerable efforts to overcome. Ford has a small marke t share therefore the sale will decline the sales and also due to global recession in the world finance market. That is the reason for decline of sales. Another reason is Ford will manufacture the standard cars which are not able to cope up with current market automobile. Opportunities Opportunities know as a favorable condition in the environment that could produce rewards for the organization if acted upon properly. Ford has to expand more option in designing the cars and commercial vehicles are expected to switch toward hybrid electric engines due to the petroleum. Hence, Ford can build the car that run on electricity that form of energy outside the petrol and diesel and to promote pass through to the future opportunities that will be increasing. Ford has a chance to become more environment friendly company with cleaner engine emissions because hybrid engines are more fuel efficient less pollute than conventional gasoline and diesel engines. Ford has a great opportunity to produce fuel efficient cars and commercial vehicles. On the other way, Ford has one more option in designing the cars and commercial vehicle based on electric engine. This can help the company to become pioneers in the industry. The Fords car is providing the facilities based on the travel habits of the whole family. By the other way, the Ford car also is medium cost car which can be giving affordable by the medium class people. Threats Threats are the meaning for a conditions or barriers that may prevent the organization from reaching its objectives. The cost of petroleum is rising day by day and remains to be in the state of uncertainly so that electric drive vehicle that is the reason will be in high demand. On the other hand, the Ford growth and development may effect by high-speed growth in amount of competitors in this automobile industry. The main competitors of Ford are Nissan, Honda, Toyota, and so on. They have also threatened Fords market share. Besides this, Fords capital spending is indeed lower than the competitor. The reason is this capital spending has included the research development expenditure which could influence the company from going ahead. If other automobile manufacturers have new ideas, program and new technology appear, that is also one of the threats to Ford Company. Therefore the economy depression also will influence the consumer ability of buying. Thus, the amount of sales will declin e. Political Forces FORD, along with other major automakers and the United Auto Workers (UAW), opposed a congressional bill to raise the average fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2013. Due to the environmental concerns, the industry has to abide with the regulations aimed for reducing the pollution levels. In the other hand, non-compliance attracts heavy fines, which prove costly to the company. Consumers can buy the cars directly at the dealers show room. Intensity of Market Coverage There are 3 types of intensity of market coverage, which are intensive distribution, selective distribution and exclusive distribution. Pride and Ferrell (2010, p400) state that intensive distribution uses all available outlets for distributing a product. Selective distribution uses only some available outlets in an area to distribute a product. Ford use exclusive distribution which is use only one outlet in a relatively large geographic. Exclusive distribution is suitable for products purchased infrequently, consumed over a long period of time, or required service or information to fit them to buyers needs. Ford Fiesta is a luxury automobile and only available in a select dealers show room. Supply Chain Management Supply chain management (Pride Ferrell, 2010, p388) is a set of approaches used to integrate the functions of operations management, logistics management, supply management and marketing channel management so products are produced and distributed, in the right quantities to the right locations and at the right time. Ford Motor Company has its own manufacturer to produce vehicle parts and combine it into a car. The Ford car will be sent through road transportation and train transportation to the dealer. PRICING STRATEGIES All of the element in the marketing mix, price is the only one to generates revenue. The other elements generate only cost. The profitability of a company is determined by the price and the competition in the market contributes the maximum to the important of pricing. Ford has implemented their own pricing strategies which is more demand or market based pricing oriented. Ford has use new strategies call Blue Tag, is expending from its large car to the small car range. The price reductions are between 6%-15% on the Ford Fiesta. Price objectives and basis The price objectives are the goals which are described the organization to achieve which through pricing effort. The pricing objectives are included marketing objectives and marketing mix strategies. Pricing basis is the initial price of a good and it is without any extra charges. The will be increase when the more specification of the car, the more the price basis of Ford product. The marketing objectives have included marketing position, survival, current profit maximization, market share leadership, and product quality leadership. Then, marketing mix strategies is target costing, non-price position, cost, and organizational considerations. New product pricing strategies Setting the base price for a new product is a necessary part of formulating a marketing strategy and is one of the most fundamental decisions in the marketing mix. The Ford Motor Company is setting two types of price which is price skimming and penetration pricing in the market industry. Price skimming is about the high possible price that people afford to pay for the product and penetration pricing is to competing brands and gain a significant market shares. For example, Ford Fiesta is committed for consumers safety like airbag, including our efforts to deliver top crash test ratings that customers look to when choosing new vehicle. So the company set a reasonable price for this model toward consumer. Promotional pricing strategies Price, as an ingredient in the marketing mix, is often coordinated with promotion. The two variables sometimes are so interrelated the pricing policy is promotion-oriented. The Ford automobile company makes promotion for the latest model Fiesta. For example, Ford promote like cash rebate for sale to attract more customers. Beside this, consumers will have a chance to get an iPhone4 and iPod as a reward when the consumers purchase this model automobile. By using this kind of promotion, it has been able to sell this model more than other competitors. Pricing issues Ford automobile may face many pricing issues like the price of materials that used to produce the cars. If the materials price is rising, it will lower the profit for the companies. On the other hand, the demand in market industry it also affects the price, if the demand for Ford Fiesta is high therefore price will increase. CONCLUSION Limitation The Ford product is expensive and only available for higher income people. The design of car is not beautiful compare to other competitor car. Recommendation Ford Motor Company can produce the car which is suitable for average income and lower income people. Ford Motor Company can try to create new design for the new car and try to post it online to let consumer vote. Conclusion Ford product have few target markets and we have do some research of how Ford Motor Company use SWOT analysis to sell their product. We also know how Ford Motor Company uses 4 elements of marketing mix to sell the product to the customer.

Absence of Evidence, or Evidence of Absence; A paper on Animal Consciou
Absence of Evidence, or Evidence of Absence? A paper on Animal Consciousness à à à à à Consciousness is a difficult term to grasp; so much so, that many scientists will not even attempt to define the term, much less search for itââ¬â¢s evidence. Most however, do agree that consciousness must include certain aspects; specifically cognition, self-awareness, memory, and abstract thought. à à à à à Lesley J. Rogers describes consciousness as, ââ¬Å"related to awareness, intelligence, and complex cognition, as well as language. Consciousness may be manifested in self-awareness, awareness of others, intentional behavior, including intentional communication, deception of others, and in the ability to make mental and symbolic representations (13).â⬠à à à à à There is no question that humans carry these attributes, but what about animals? Some philosophers, including Descartes, claimed that while humans are conscious, animals are like machines, with no thought process or sentience. Others claim that animals are very capable of consciousness, and that we just have not had the capabilities to test the aspects of it through the scientific method. As Donald R. Griffin expressed: Conscious thinking may well be a core function of central nervous systems. For conscious animals enjoy the advantage of being able to think about alternative actions and select behavior they believe will get them what they want or help them avoid what they dislike or fear. Of course human consciousness is astronomically more complex and versatile than any conceivable animal thinking, but the basic question addressedâ⬠¦is whether the difference is qualitative and absolute, or whether animals are conscious even though the content of their consciousness is undoubtedly limited and very likely quite different of ours. (3) à à à à à This paper will look at what evidence there is that may imply that some, if not all, vertebrate animals may have the capacity for conscious thinking. Cognition, for example is something that animals may require in order to adapt to their changing environments so quickly. Cognition is an animalââ¬â¢s ability to make a decision by evaluating or processing current information based on some representation of prior experience (Kamil in Pepperberg 127). Some animal studies, such as Franci... ...th other animals, because we do not share the same forms of communication. We can not ask what other animals are thinking, what they want or feel, or even determine if they have a sense of self. What is known right now is that we do not know, but that is no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater and assume animal consciousness does not or can not exist. Until further observations or tests can be developed that will start to lead man to a closer understanding of the animal mind, it is important to remember that absence of evidence does not imply evidence of absence. It was not until recent that studies would present the impact sexual abuse has had on children. Little is known about adults who have been sexually abused. A sexually abused child has been an unspoken phrase dating as far back as the early 1970s (Finkelhor, 1984). Studies on those children who have been sexually abused are rare, although they are presented at a disproportionate rate to their counterparts. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is based on official statistics which concurs with the preceding statement (Briere & Runtz 1986). According to the National Incidence Studies, there has been a 67 percent increase in all forms of abuse from the years 1986 to 1993 involving children. Although there was a decrease of child sexual abuse, of the 67 percent only 10 percent comprised of child sexual abuse cases (Jones, 2001). Various reasons have been the cause for this decrease, such asâ⬠¦.. Child sexual abuse is a topic spoken about very loosely in the era we now live. After conducting my research, I would later learn that empirical research would guide me into journals with a broader spectrum on the topic. This topic interests me in more ways than one. Although my research does not deal with the mind frame of the offender, it does help me understand victimology or the relationship between the offender and the victim; which will be discussed later in this paper. The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of sexual abuse on juvenile victims, if any at all. A meta-analysis will be conducted combining at least ten (10) professional journals and books. The importance of this study depicts the everlasting traumatic effect that sexual abuse has on children and whether the impact is no more than immediate or ... ...xual abuse was rare early on, when conducted it was combined with adults who too were abused. Some studies specified child abuse by gender, focusing either on boys, or only girls. Methodologies used by researchers had some limitations as well. Some depended on clinicianââ¬â¢s reports rather than self-reports from the victim. In early research, longitudinal studies were not conducted. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis reconfirms prior research findings; the impact of child sexual abuse can be traumatic, everlasting, and symptomatic. Nevertheless, some sexually abused children may never experience any interpersonal symptoms. These findings have a number of important implications for theory development (Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor). There has not been a proven relationship between sexual abuse and suicide since a third event can produce both (Briere & Elliot).

Casey Anthony Essay
As seen on national television in 2011, Casey Anthony, well known for her trial that hooked the whole world, pleaded not-guilty in July of 2011 for the murder of her two year old daughter. Reported missing on July 15th 2008, Caylee Anthony was found and pronounced dead on December 11th 2008. Majority of the world would disagree with Casey Anthony pleading, and becoming not-guilty, while a few on the other hand would agree. On July 15th Caylee was reported missing by her grandmother Cindy. When Caylee was reported missing it was said that she had already been missing for 31 days. Cindy said that Caseyââ¬â¢s car smelled like ââ¬Å"a dead body had been inside it.â⬠Cindy said when she brought up not seeing Caylee in a while Casey had numerous explanations as to Cayleeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"whereaboutsâ⬠until finally admitting that she had not seen Caylee in weeks (that was when the report was made by concerned, Cindy.) Not only did Casey not even report her own daughter missing, it took extensive questioning from family until Casey told family that Caylee was in fact missing, What kind of caring mother would hide the fact that there child is and has been for some time, missing? Casey also showed no emotion during her trials, or while investigating, or being interviewed. She was caught in numerous lies with police investigators, and never helped/wanted to help, or even seemed concerned with investigators during the search. That is suspicious behavior of someone who clearly already knew the fate of Caylee. On top of acting uninterested by the search, investigators found that chloroform and neck breaking were both found on Caseyââ¬â¢s computer history. Large amounts of Chloroform were found in Caseyââ¬â¢s car. Chloroform vapors can be deadly causing respiratory or cardiac arrest. Minor symptoms it can cause are fatigue, dizziness and headache. This is not coincidental, the obvious evidence is right in front of the world, but how is this woman found not-guilty? Although some people believe that Casey is in fact not guilty because she had several much more reasonable and less drastic alternatives that would have kept her from getting in so much trouble, and believe that the findings were coincidental. In conclusion weather or not Casey Anthony murdered her daughter or not she is and will forever be pronounced not-guilty of her childââ¬â¢s murder. But would you let her babysit your child?
