Placebos Essays (1376 words) - Clinical Research, Medical Ethics
Fake treatments Why we need fake treatments English/History By Jj wallis A fake treatment is characterized as an idle substance taking after a drug, given for mental impact or as a control in assessing a medication accepted to be dynamic. Anyway the fake treatment just fits this portrayal under the restrictions it has been given by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which alludes to the fake treatment as an investigational new medication. In fact, up until the current quite a bit of medication was based on fake treatments. Not very far in the past, the ceremonies and images of recuperating comprised the main part of the doctors armamentarium. In the early many years of the twentieth century, the vast majority of the drug that specialists conveyed in their little dark packs and kept in their office cupboards had practically no pharmacological incentive against the ailments for which they were endorsed. By the by, their utilization in the fitting clinical setting was no uncertainty every now and again beneficial.(Brown, 6) Despite the fact that fake treatments have been demonstrated compelling medication on numerous occasions the FDA stays hesitant to favor them for anything over clinical research. The FDA remains on their dissatisfaction with fake treatments as medication on the premise that patients are to be given the best treatment accessible. Who is to state that a fake treatment isn't as, if not more powerful than the acknowledged cure? There are a perpetual assortment of cases that have demonstrated fake treatments uncertainly compelling. Among the most celebrated of these cases is the account of Mr. Wright, who was found to have malignant growth and in 1957 was given just days to live. Hospitalized in Long Beach, California, with tumors the size of oranges, he heard that researchers had found a pony serum, Krebiozen, that gave off an impression of being powerful against malignancy. After Wright asked to get the serum, his doctor, Dr. Philip West, at long last concurred and gave wright the infusion on a Friday evening, not revealing to Wright that infusion comprised distinctly of water. The next Monday the specialist was surprised to find that the patient's tumors were no more. Dr. West later composed the tumors, had softened like snowballs on a hot oven. At Tulane University, Dr. Eileen Palace has been utilizing a fake treatment to reestablish sexual excitement in ladies who state they are nonorgasmic. The ladies are snared to a biofeedback machine that they are told measures their vaginal blood stream, a list of excitement. At that point they are indicated sexual upgrades that would stimulate most ladies. The analysis at that point deceives the ladies by imparting a bogus criticism sign, inside 30 seconds, that their vaginal blood stream has expanded. Very quickly after they become truly stirred. For another situation an examination was done in Japan on 13 individuals that were very adversely affected by poison ivy. Every individual was scoured on one arm with an innocuous leaf and told that it was poison ivy and afterward scoured on the contrary arm with poison ivy and told that it was innocuous. Each of the thirteen broke out in a rash where the innocuous leaf had reached their arm. Just two responded to the toxin ivy leaves. (Blakeslee, 2) In one more model, patients with angina pectoris, chest torment, related with coronary illness, have been appeared to improve considerably following an activity that included just a straightforward skin entry point. Angina additionally improved after a kind of course medical procedure once thought to be successful however later saw as inadequate. (Turner, 1) These are only a couple of an incredible number of cases that demonstrate the viability of fake treatments. How accomplish fake treatments work? There are numerous speculations on how fake treatments work yet actually no clear answers. Many accept that the reaction to fake treatments is one of molding. That will be that the site of a specialist, his white coat, the clean smell, and an endorsed drug is compared with being relieved, and in light of the fact that we believe that we will show signs of improvement we do. Some believe that a fake treatment may diminish pressure, permitting the body to recapture some common ideal degree of wellbeing. Others accept that exceptional particles in the cerebrum help do the misleading impact. An ongoing report found that focused on creatures could deliver a valium like substance in their cerebrum on the off chance that they have some command over the wellspring of the pressure. Why you should only use the official guides for SAT ACT Reading
If youve read some of my other posts, you probably know that Im not a big fan of the big-name test-prep guides (e.g. Kaplan, Princeton Review, Barrons, etc.). But while I admit that they might have some merit for Math, the one section that you should absolutely and incontrovertibly not compromise on, at least in terms of taking practice tests, is Reading. There are a couple of reasons for this: 1) The answer choices are problematic The answers are either 1) improperly reasoned, 2) go outside the bounds of the passage that is, they actually require you to have some outside knowledge of a subject in order to infer the answer to a question or 3) force you to make irrelevant distinctions. What ultimately happens is that people walk away with the impression that the answers to questions are arbitrary, that they dont necessarily have anything to do with the readings themselves. It also makes it impossible to apply any sort of rigorous reasoning process to the test, when in fact it is precisely the refinement of that reasoning process that often leads to higher scores. SAT and ACT questions may feel tricky at times, but the right answer is still the only right answer, not something completely arbitrary cooked up by the test-makers. 2) The passages are wrong This usually comes down to one issue: copyright. Most of the passages that show up on the SAT and ACT are taken from books published in the last couple of decades that is, books still under copyright. In order to accurately mimic the test, therefore, it is necessary to use texts from recent works. The College Board and the ACT are able to gain permission for the works from the publishers; for whatever reason (money?), the major test-prep companies usually are not. As a result, those companies are forced to use either texts no longer under copyright (from books more than 70 years old) or have passages written specifically for them. Both of these have major issues. First, texts more than 70 years old, while difficult, are not difficult in the precise way that real SAT/ACT texts are difficult. Their language, style, and subject matter are often old-fashioned, and they give the impression that the reading portions of both tests loftier and more overtly literary than they are. On the other hand, passages written specifically for test-prep guides tend to be overly straightforward and factual, whereas real test passages are usually somewhat more complex both in terms of topic and organization. So please, do yourself a favor: if you havent been using the College Board book or the ACT Official Guide for Reading, go out and get it. And if youve finished all the tests in it and want to study some more, sign up for the online program. And if youre done with that, well, go on the Scientific American or Smithsonian magazine website and, and start reading.

Academia and Text Matching Software Essay - 1091 Words
Critically evaluate the use of text matching software as an aid to developing good scholarship practice Introduction Academic dishonesty such as plagiarism has been a major factor in education that has affected studentsââ¬â¢ success and academic achievements in recent years. Plagiarism according to Park (2003) is the act of appropriating or copying another personââ¬â¢s work and passing them on as oneââ¬â¢s idea without acknowledging the original source. Park (2003) noted that plagiarism is a growing problem and has been a misuse of the writings of another author, their ideas, hypothesis, theories, research findings and interpretations. Furthermore studies by Chao, Wilhelm and Neureuther (2009) emphasised thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Good scholarship practice can be referred to as a formal study which involves academic learning and achievement. It involves acknowledging where information used to support ideas in a particular context is gotten and citing the sources (Locke and Latham, 2009). Britag and Mahmud (2009) pointed out that different strategies which include the use of electro nic software tools such as turnitin have been derived for detecting plagiarism with the intent of allowing studentsââ¬â¢ take responsibility of their learning and also work hand in hand with their tutors in the drafting stages of their assignments. According to Britag and Mahmud (2009) manual detection of plagiarism is difficult because it is time consuming and this is the reason why some tutors are reluctant in pursuing potential cases of plagiarism. However both the manual method of plagiarism detection and the electronic text matching method should be employed (Britag and Mahmud, 2009). Scaife (2007) argued that the electronic text matching software is not the solution to eliminating plagiarism because the software only focuses on text matching of paper under review with documents (journals, articles, e-books and conference papers) found on the internet or which has been previously submitted and this is a limitation because the only detection are focused on electronic material s without considering some non-electronic paper based documents which could still be plagiarised. The Life Of A Slave Girl By Harriet Jacobs - 1999 Words
The narrative of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs gives insight to the cruel treatments and the distressing existence of those and that she encountered herself in bondage during the early 1800s. Harriet writes of her own life under the pseudonym ââ¬ËLinda Brentââ¬â¢ and shares personal tales of her experiences with merciless masters and mistresses prior to her escape, and also the historical events of other slaves and the impact it had on them as a community during the Antebellum time period. The book follows Linda throughout her quest for freedom to save first and foremost, her children, from the brutalities of enslavement and the corruption of their young minds, as Lindaââ¬â¢s was similarly polluted at a young age. Jacobs makes the profound statement that no human should ever be obligated to participate in captivity held by other humans who feel superior to their slaves, whether with kind masters or not. To clarify, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl takes place in the Antebellum Period. These were the years after the War of 1812 and before the Civil War. The Antebellum Period was when the slavery, hand-in-hand with racism, spread widely across the states, but so did abolitionists and their support to end slavery. Linda Brent was an adult right in the heart of the Antebellum period, so these two conflicting sides were apparent in her life especially when desiring her freedom. The Causes of School Violence free essay sample
As for the music, heavy metal and rap were only a vague concept in the early seventies, but they did not rise to large popularity until the mid-eighties. Television, well known during this time for being very violent (Gung If, Kayak), it still seems unlikely as there were only two incidents in the 1 9705. For those reasons, these early crimes could not have been linked to the choice of music one liked or their hobbies. In fact, one plausible cause of this might be found in the rise of mothers leaving the home and getting jobs. The neglect of caring for these managers is what causes them to turn on society and become violent. Some of the indirect causes of school violence are music, video games and television. The reason why teens become engrossed in such things is only because of the attention or usually lack of attention from parents, teachers and authority figures. We will write a custom essay sample on The Causes of School Violence or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Most school shootings have been traced back to forms of depression in the aggressors lives. Now sometimes the depression may be caused from other sources or just a random occurrence during teen brain growth. Occasionally it is directly from mistreatment from parents or others; UT it is the fault of parents inaction to treat the depression that leads to the shooting. A common trait with many of the shootings is the mistake of the parents allowing guns to be in easy access or in some way encouraging the violence in teenagers. Now some parents do keep guns in their homes for protection, but these parents are the ones who, for whatever reason, are irresponsible in the way they either lock up their guns or teach their children the proper way to use them. Irresponsibility is the paramount factor in the cause of school violence. When parents are ignorant to what happens to their kids at school r their behavior patterns, there is no telling what could go wrong.Hopefully teachers will catch these signals and help the students. Nevertheless, teachers have also overlooked the problems. It is fortunate to be in a school where there are decent teachers. Many are great at what they do, some are okay, and others are known to be lacking in ability. It seems that most teachers would be able to spot disturbances in a students life. Whatever spawns a teachers ignorance, whether it is their bad training or a severe dislike Of the student, part Of the blame lies with them.If we had more of the good teachers who regardless of the student, treated them fairly and gave them the attention and love that they deserve, we might be able to spot these problems sooner rather than later. A solution to this problem may never happen, due to the fact that violence is widespread and almost accepted as everyday life. Yet, some simple objectives may reduce the number of incidents we see today. First, the number of good teachers needs to increase in our schools. My suggestion would increase the number of years a teacher needs to receive tenure. It is good for all; the utter teachers are recognized and kept for their efforts while the bad teachers are rid of earlier. Once the teacher receives tenure, an immediate pay increase should be issued. A respectable pay increase would show that the teacher has proved his or her worth to the community. Second, clubs that promote non-violence should be in every school, as they help provide a friendly social atmosphere at school. Sadly, not much can be done at home, as that lies in the private world where schools do not have jurisdiction apart from reporting abuse in the home.Since schools are where the incidents append, the people there have the best judgment about what goes on between the potential shooter and the potential victims. Perhaps its the only place where the problem Can be stopped. If the populace still believes that violent video games and music are the cause they need only to look at what they have done to stop it, which is nothing. After countless rumors that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City would be the last of the series due to increased school violence and some copyright issues, Grand Theft Auto: San Andrea, a new realistic and bloodier video game for teenagers to play hit store shelves. While music itself has evolved into a less violent form, gangster rap and heavy metal are still widely listened to genres. The times when the public has tried to shut down certain symbols of their respected mediums, they have pleaded to their first amendment rights. People need to know that teenagers are listening to this music and playing these destructive video games because parents do not give the attention they need. Prevention is the key; violence cannot take shape if it is restricted first. Works Cited 1973-74 united States network television schedule. Wisped, the free encyclopedia.

Metric Essays - 9, , Term Papers, Research Papers
Metric The metric system vs. the U.S. system. I have looked all over the Internet and it is really hard to find a page that is all for converting to the metric system. I feel the same way I think that our way is fine it will be to confusing for a lot of people to figure it out. Things are working fine now why do anything to change it. There are problems that would occur if we changed, there are good things. If we changed the system of measurement that would change everything and that would be difficult for the older people who are unable to remember how to convert to the metric system. They decided that it was not a good idea to go to the metric system because, then they would have to change everything and that would cost trillions of dollars to do so they decided to stick with the way that the U.S. has always used. That was about twenty years ago. I think that was a good idea because there are so many things that are so accustomed to this way. They have changed some things around like engines so that they can be sold all over the world. The companies that have changed are Koehler and Briggs and Striations. Koehler has changed over completely over to the metric way so that they are able to make more by having the ability to be sold everywhere. I think that that is a wonderful thing to do and I am sure that the profits are showing an increase because of it. It had to be really costly to make all of the changes to There machines that make the engines and I think that they are so happy that they made those changes. The Briggs and Striations haven't completely converted yet and they are having lots of problems selling to the rest of the world, when they are not designed to be worked on in all areas of the world. I think that they will make it so that it is easier to be worked on in other countries but I don't think that they will change it completely because they don't want to give in completely to that market then they may be losing out on some of the things here that they should be focusing on. I like the fact that we are making these wonderful things for others but I hope that we don't lose sight of the fact that we don't have to change things around for this country. We will always use the U.S. system no matter how much changes it because that is the way that we do things here, everyone isn't making changes to suite the other countries. I hope that it stays that way for a long time. Those are just a few things that would be affected and there are so many more, would you like to be the one to blame if this went wrong. I think that there is way too much at risk, and there is no sense in bothering something that works rather well already. So think that they should just leave well enough alone. Immigrants Will Separate from Families For Less Time
Immigrants Will Separate from Families For Less Time One of the first actions of the Obama administration in 2012 was an important rule change to immigration policy that reduced the time that spouses and children of undocumented immigrants were separated from their citizen relatives while applying for legal status. Latino and Hispanic groups, immigration lawyers and immigrant advocates praised the move. Conservatives on Capitol Hill criticized the rule change. Because the administration changed an administrative rule and not U.S. law, the move did not require the approval of Congress. Based on census data and anecdotal evidence, hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens are married to undocumented immigrants, many of them Mexican and Latin American. What is the Rule Change? The hardship waiver eliminated the requirement that illegal immigrants leave the United States for long periods before they could ask the government to waive its ban on legally re-entering the U.S. The ban typically lasted three to 10 years depending on how long the undocumented immigrant had been in the United States without the governmentââ¬â¢s permission. The rule allowed family members of U.S. citizens to petition the government for the so-called hardship waiver before the undocumented immigrant returns home to formally apply for a U.S. visa. Once waivers were approved, immigrants could apply for green cards. The net effect of the change was that families would not endure long separations while immigration officials were reviewing their cases. Separations that had lasted years were reduced to weeks or less. Only immigrants without criminal records were eligible to apply for the waiver. Before the change, applications for hardship waivers would take as long as six months to process. Under former rules, the government had received about 23,000 hardship applications in 2011 from families that faced separations; about 70 percent were granted. Praise for the Rule Change At the time, Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Citizenship, and Immigration Services director, said the move underscores ââ¬Å"the Obama Administrationââ¬â¢s commitment to family unity and administrative efficiencyâ⬠and will save taxpayers money. He said the change would increase the ââ¬Å"predictability and consistency of the application process.â⬠The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) applauded the change and said it ââ¬Å"will give countless American families a chance to stay together safely and legally.â⬠ââ¬Å"Although this is just a small part of dealing with the dysfunction of our immigration system, it represents a significant change in the process for many individuals,â⬠said Eleanor Pelta, the AILA president. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a move that will be less destructive to families and bring about a fairer and more streamlined waiver process.â⬠Before the rule change, Pelta said she knew of applicants who have been killed while waiting for approval in dangerous Mexican border cities that are riddled with violence. ââ¬Å"The adjustment to the rule is important because it literally saves lives,â⬠she said. The National Council of La Raza, one of the nationââ¬â¢s most prominent Latino civil rights groups, praised the change, calling it ââ¬Å"sensible and compassionate.â⬠Criticism of the Hardship Waiver At the same time, Republicans criticized the rule change as politically motivated and a further weakening of U.S. law. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said the president had ââ¬Å"granted back-door amnestyâ⬠to potentially millions of illegal immigrants. Political Motivation for Immigration Reform In 2008, Obama had won two-thirds of the Latino/Hispanic vote, one the countryââ¬â¢s fastest-growing voting blocs. Obama had campaigned on implementing a comprehensive immigration reform plan during his first term. But he said problems with the worsening U.S. economy and stormy relations with Congress forced him to postpone plans for immigration reform. Latino and Hispanic groups had criticized the Obama administration for aggressively pursuing deportations during his first presidential term. In the 2011 general presidential election, a solid majority of Hispanic and Latino voters still favored Obama while expressing in independent polls a disapproval of his deportation policies. At the time, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had said the administration would use more discretion before deporting undocumented immigrants. The aim of their deportation plans was to concentrate on immigrants will criminal records rather than those who have violated only immigration laws.

The importance and influence of James Lovelock in geography Essay
The importance and influence of James Lovelock in geography - Essay Example James Lovelock represents a new breed of scientists who are working to change the way that science in general and geography in particular is perceived. Lovelock operates independently as a scientist, an environmentalist and as a futurologist. Though Lovelock has postulated numerous ideas over time but he is most famously recognised for his Gaia hypothesis. This hypothesis postulates that the biosphere surrounding the Earth regulates itself independently and possesses the capacity to keep the planetââ¬â¢s environment in a healthy state. This regulation is carried out in the biosphere using several chemical and physical processes that tend to regulate the balance of nature repeatedly. However, Lovelockââ¬â¢s work has been met with scepticism in some circles around the world and there have been attempts at postulating ideas that stand in opposition to Lovelockââ¬â¢s ideas. 2. Life History James Lovelock was born to working class parents in Letchworth Garden City located in Hert fordshire, England. His parents had an overbearing stress for education given their own backgrounds as illiterate and semi-literate workers in manufacturing establishments. After the birth of Lovelock the family migrated to London where he developed a certain distaste for authority given his treatment at Strand School (Lovelock, 2001). After completing school Lovelock worked for a photography firm during the day and took evening classes at Birkbeck College. Following this he enrolled at Manchester University for a chemistry programme and received his degree in 1941. After a chemistry degree Lovelock took up medicine and received his Ph.D. in 1948 from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Lovelockââ¬â¢s education did not end here, instead, he travelled over to the United States in order to pursue a degree in medicine. After being awarded the prestigious Rockefeller Travelling Fellowship in Medicine in 1954, Lovelock chose to spend the period first at Harvard Univers ity and then at Yale University. This was followed by a D.Sc. degree in biophysics from London University in 1959 after which he joined the National Institute in London. However, Lovelock resigned only two years later in 1961 and took up teaching as a full time profession at Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. While he was at Baylor, Lovelock worked in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Lunar and Planetary Research. Three years later in 1964 Lovelock resigned his academic position in order to pursue independent scientific practice. Lovelock has contributions to the fields of geo-physiology and medical research as well as numerous investigative inventions to his name such as gas chromatography, electron capture detector, palladium trans-modulator and a tracer method for mass transport measurements in air and water masses (Ecolo, 2010). This paper will attempt to discuss the contributions of James Lovelock to science in general and to geography in particular. 3. Scientific Contributions 3.1. Electron Capture Detector and CFCs The electron capture detector is one of Lovelockââ¬â¢s most esteemed inventions. This device has enabled scientists to investigate the phenomenon of ozone depletion particularly the role played by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Lovelock was the first scientist to find that CFCs were pervasively present in the stratosphere although they were not a natural constituent (Lovelock, 1971). In an effort to quantify his findings Lovelock set out to measure the concentration levels of CFCs in the atmosphere on two different self funded expeditions. The first expedition took Lovelock to

Developing IMC plan for Tween Mobile phone Essay
Developing IMC plan for Tween Mobile phone - Essay Example For the last two years, this young company, which has the credit of designing some of the most innovative applications in the mobile industry, was experiencing a dearth in the sales of its products. Further analysis revealed that the sales of the company depreciated as a direct response to the saturation of the adult mobile users while the market for new mobile applications is increasing exponentially due to the emergence of a new category of young consumers. This led to the company feeling the need to design a new marketing communication plan which will increasingly focus on the various communication objectives, selection of advertising strategy on a creative note, and finally a highly effective media plan. Background Information The world today has become a highly digitized and connected world. The reason for this extreme level of digitization as well as consecutiveness can be attributed to the increasing advancements of technology with regards to the communication needs of human b eing and human controlled processes of automatic and automated that has emerged all over the world. Keeping pace with the rapid advancements of communication technology, the mobile phones have emerged as the most primary form of human communication all over the world, more effectively in the emerging as well as the economically established countries and markets around the world. In Australia, the consumption of mobile phones has gone up tremendously. Various market researches on consumers have identified that the young group of child consumers, who increasingly fall in the age group of 6 to 13 years are one of the most active and avid customers, who display highly attractive and strongly influential consumer behavior. Researches further show that the young consumers hold significant power in terms of influencing the consumer behavior of their parents in a direct and indirect manner (Global Trade Marketing, 2005). Talking in terms of various categories of consumers, the consumers fal ling within the age group of 6 to 13 years, which comprises around a total of 11 percent of the Australian population, have acquired the needs of owning a cell phone (Telstra, 2007). Talking in terms of statistical data, it can be said that the around ? of the total consumers falling in this category from the Australia region already have individual possession of cell phones (Downie and Glazebrook, 2007). While the sole purpose of being provided with cell phones has been cited as the logic of being able to stay connected with their parents, yet this young group of consumers have increasingly developed a significantly different category of consumer behavior which is itself unique in nature (Roy Morgan Researchââ¬â¢s Young Australians Survey, Summary). It has been increasingly decoded that the young group of consumers increasingly sees the mobile phones as a symbolic representation of their status and a high percentage of them state that the brand of the mobile phones that are bein g used by them is increasingly important to them.

Feminist organizations - Essay Example Accordingly, the following brief analysis will make an inventory of each of these aspects as a function of further delineating and defining the National Organization for Women. Firstly, the website which was analyzed denoted that fact that the ultimate goal of the group was to take immediate action for the equality of women. Although this is specifically tied to the manner in which womenââ¬â¢s issues and womenââ¬â¢s rights are exhibited within the United States, the group also seeks to effect change in various regions around the globe on behalf of women and their needs/rights. The mission statement itself further seeks to hone the areas of focus that NOW seeks to integrate with. Accordingly, the mission statement is as follows, ââ¬Å"the purpose of NOW is to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with menâ⬠(NOW 1). Similarly, with regards to the political orientation of the group, the website itself promotes the understanding that the group is specifically interested in engaging in actions that promote womenââ¬â¢s rights, feminism, anti-racism, ending homophobia, promoting LGBT rights, and promoting reproductive rights. As might be easily inferred, the group generally promotes a more liberal interpretation of the political paradigm; siding more often than not with liberal and progressive elements within the United States and typically aligning with the Democratic party. However, with that being said, it must also be understood that NOW does not promote any one single political party; rather, their interests are supra-political and the group only sides with more progressive and liberal ideologies due to the fact that these most specifically represent the goals and ends that the group is trying to effect. With such a constraining level of missions and values, the group is invariably at

Comparing Ron Howards How the Grinch Stole Christmas to Dr. Seuss Gri
Comparing Ron Howard's How the Grinch Stole Christmas to Dr. Seuss' Grinch Whether or not you consider Ron Howard's version of Dr Seuss's classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas comical, yet disgraceful, there's no ignoring the little green monster's reign over the box office. The movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey, was released in November of 2000, reaching a gross high of over $200 million in the U.S alone (The Numbers). However, I feel that this version has over exaggerated the original story, and I will back this up by showing many examples of how Dr. Seussââ¬â¢s classic turned into a marketing, franchise frenzy. Dr. Seuss's original fable is a simple story told with a great moral that criticizes the commercialization of Christmas. The original story features an ââ¬Å"Ebenezer Scroogeâ⬠type creature that lives up the mountains outside "Whoville." The Grinch indulges himself in the annual ritual of spoiling everyone's festivities with a series of nasty pranks. This particular year however he plans to sabotage the holiday season by dressing as Santa Claus, clim...

Jose Rizal Essay
It is common knowledge that Dr. Jose Rizal is the Philippine National Hero who chose to fight the battle with his quills, paved the way for our independence and died doing so. However, it has always been fascinating to learn things that werenââ¬â¢t discussed on classrooms and lectures, to divulge facts that make a famous character seem like just the rest of us. So here are 10 fun facts that most Filipinos might not know about Rizal. 1.Jose ââ¬Å"Pepeâ⬠Rizal was bullied as a kid. As a kid. Rizal was too small for his age and made him a target of Pedroââ¬â¢s bullying, insulting Pepe in front of the other students at the school of Maestro Justiniano Cruz. Equipped with his Uncle Miguelââ¬â¢s teachings about the art of wrestling, Rizal challenged Pedro to a fistfight. Rizal won and became popular as he proved himself a worthy opponent. 2.Jose Rizal wrote his first poem at the age of 8. Entitled ââ¬Å"Sa Aking Mga Kababataâ⬠[To My Fellow Youth]. And it depicts oneââ¬â¢s fervent love for his native language and asking his own generation to embrace it like we all should. 3.Rizal was a Hyperpolyglot. He mastered 22 languages: Filipino, Ilokano, Bisayan, Subanon, Latin, Spanish, Greek, English, French, German, Arabic, Malay, Sanskrit, Hebrew, Dutch, Catalan, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Portugese, Swedish and Russian. 4.Rizal was addressed by his European lover as the ââ¬Å"little bad boyâ⬠. It is not a secret that Jose Rizal had his way with women. And on the series of letters that were discovered to be love messages for Rizal, a Belgian woman named Suzanne wrote : ââ¬Å"There will never be any home in which you are so loved as that in Brussels. So, you little bad boy, hurry back.â⬠Now, who can resist giggling on this information? 5.He was accepted as one of the few Renaissance man in the world. A man who had broad intellectual interest. He gave a portion to his father, a friend in Hong Kong and he spent the rest buying agricultural lands in Talisay. 7.Rizal jovially pinched his students who canââ¬â¢t answer his queries. During his exile in Dapitan, he was able to establish a school, he had 21 pupils who were never asked to pay for tuition but was required by Rizal to work for the community. 8.Rizal is believed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. There is a religious sect in Calamba Laguna, ââ¬Å"Rizalistaâ⬠, used to be known as ââ¬Å"Iglesia ng Watawat ng Lahiâ⬠[Banner of the Race Church]. They combine religion and patriotism and believe that the execution in Bagumbayan was just a phase that he had to endure to be in the presence of God. They also believe that Rizal is still alive and lives deep in the forest of Mount Makiling. 9.Rizal was rumored to be the father of Adolf Hitler. Because of his famed reputation as a Casanova, it was believed that he was involved with a beautiful woman living somewhere in the border of Germany and Austria. Funny how Filipino imagination wanders. 10.Moments before his death, Rizal was reported to remain in a tranquil state. Before his execution, Dr. Felipe Ruiz Castillo took his vital signs and was surprised to confirm that his pulse rate was normal. Rizal was indeed ready and unafraid of his fate.

My Friend Uploaded A Post On Facebook And It Got Me...
Recently my friend uploaded a post on Facebook and it got me contemplating. The question was posed by a man named Alan Watts and he asked, ââ¬Å"What would you like to do if money were no object?â⬠This inquiry seems to be wandering the internet a bit because this was roughly the third time that I have regarded it, so I took it as a sign and I paused to direct this question to myself. Of course, there is a multitude of things that I yearn to do. If money wasnââ¬â¢t the issue like many of us make it out to be, of course, there would be ample to do. I discern that this question is posed more for what type of work would you do but I was thinking about stuff that I would love to do regardless. The most predominate desire for me is to travel. I love to write and that will always be a constant thing, but I think it would be great to do both. I recognize that many people would have a similar response, yet my strong desire to travel made me consider deeply as to why I had such a tenacious want for it. I believe one of the reasons why that deep down, we still hold on to the ancient survival instinct of migration, which can never really be satisfied. I believe that this could also hold true for me. As I think more about it, I find that it was not really the destinations that I want to go to but the means of the journey that I wish to experience. My husband is the one who made me conscious of this. He likes to travel and see places as well, but just didnââ¬â¢t understand the concept of people

Theme Of Religion In Catcher In The Rye - 859 Words
In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses the motif of religion to develop the characterization of Holden Caulfield as a teenage boy from New York City who suffers from depression and loneliness. Holden Caulfield is the edgy, rebel, protagonist of this story. He recalls his days at his school, Pencey Prep, and roaming around the city for around three days after getting kicked out. During Caulfieldââ¬â¢s tale, Salinger mentions encounters of religion. Each encounter begins with Holden trying to connect with others or himself through God or Jesus, but ultimately failing. The motif of religion helps the reader understand Holdenââ¬â¢s loneliness because it shows how desperate he is to connect with a higher power to feel less alone. Holdenââ¬â¢s parents are ââ¬Å"different religions, and all the children in [his] family are atheistsâ⬠(112). He even goes as far as complaining about how ââ¬Å"[ministers] sound so phony when they talkâ⬠(112). After Sunny, the prostitute Holden hired, leaves Holdenââ¬â¢s hotel room, Holden tries to pray, but he ââ¬Å"[cannot] always pray when [he] feels like itâ⬠(111). This is due to his negativity towards religion, but it does not change th e fact that Holden keeps turning to religion when he feels alone. The only reason why Holden even hired Sunny was to be able to converse with her, not to sleep with her. This action, along with him trying to pray, really shows how desperate Holden is for some company to feel less lonely. In addition, Holden has a cynical view towards people who practice religion, specifically Catholics, because he deems them as selfishly trying to figure out if the person they are talking to is Catholic as well.Show MoreRelatedHow Salingerââ¬â¢s Holden Caulfield Relates to Teenagers Throughout Time1412 Words à |à 6 PagesHow Salingerââ¬â¢s Holden Caulfield Relates to Teenagers Throughout Time In 1951, J.D. Communism The Effects on North Korea free essay sample
Communism: The Effects on North Korea Jnt235 North Korea is one of the most secretive countries on earth. Its regarded as an intelligence black hole (Inside North Korea). North Korea, a communist dictatorship, is known to be very secretive, but also is one of the cruelest countries on earth to its people. Communism is a political, social, and economic system in which the government is based on a collective society with land, property, and economic activities controlled by the state (Lansford 9). The North Korean government does not like to show the world what really happens inside their country. A U. S. -based rights group has estimated that there are up to 200,000 political prisoners in North Korea (North Korea Profile). Many of the people living in the camps are Just the family members of the prisoners. Citizens can be sent to these work camps if they talked badly against the government or other minor crimes. The communist government of North Korea causes civilians to live in extreme conditions and suffer the wrath of their leaders and soldiers. The lives of the innocent could benefit if a new form of government takes place to stop the pain and suffering. Korea did not xperience communism until 1948 when the north side and the south side broke up into two different countries: North and South Korea. During WWII, the Allied Forces coerced the Japanese Imperial Forces out of Korea. Communist Russia occupied the north side while the democratic U. S. backed the south. Once tension started building up between Russia and the U. S. , it was impossible to bring the two sides back together as one country. The north took in communism and the south adopted democracy (Shah). When North Korea embraced communism, a young man named Kim II Sung began to lead the new country. He was respected by many in North Korea and even adored by some. In 1950, Kim II Sung invaded the south to unify the country (Inside North Korea). This led to the Korean War and the south side along with the help of America fought to stop communism from entering the southern border. The south never was reunited with the north and the communist ways continue to stay with North Korea only. Currently, a 148 mile long border divides the north and south from each other. The long border is called the 38th Parallel. This is the most heavily guarded border in the world (Inside North Korea). South Korea trictly guards this border because they do not want North Korean spies or any military personnel to enter into their country and gain any information to the north that could affect them. Also, the south wants to defend their borders so much to protect them from communism spreading into their country. Because of the terrible conditions North Korean citizens live through every day, South Korea w ants to stop all threats of bringing communism into their country and ruining their own way of life. Since North Korea became a country, they have had three leaders that have controlled the country under the reigns of communism. North Koreas first communist leader was Kim II Sung. He, along with the Russian government, founded the country and put communism in place as the North Korean form of government. Kim II Sung set Juche as North Koreas economic system (Communism: North Korea). Jucne is a torm ot selt-reliance. It is a mixture ot xenophobic nationalism (unreasonably fearful of or hating anyone or anything foreign or strange), central planning and economic independence. Using this self-reliant economy, Kim II Sung ruled until he died in 1994. After his death, his son, Kim Jong II, ruled with identical tactics as his father. Even though North Korea tried to produce all their needs domestically, Kim Jong II loved importing meals, goods, and clothes from other countries around the world (Communism: North Korea). Kim Jong II was an absolute dictator who was worshipped in a personality cult that was more extreme than any other in any country (Inside North Korea). A historian on North Korea, Michael Breen, says, Kim Jong II was the son of god in North Korea. He was the state. The notion of questioning his ability to rule never entered into things (Inside North Korea). In 2011, Kim Jong II died and all the power was given to his youngest son Kim Jong I-Jn. After he died, Kim Jong II was given the title eternal general secretary of the party and eternal chairman of the National Defense Commission. Kim Jong IIs father, Kim II Sung, had received the title eternal president when he passed away as well (North Korea). Kim Jong Un is currently the supreme leader of North Korea. He rules with an iron fist Just like his father and grandfather. Because the country is based around Juche, it is hard to produce all the necessities people need such as food. Since the mid-1990s, aid agencies around the world have estimated around two illion people have died from starvation caused by food shortages that were due to natural disasters and economic mismanagement (North Korea Profile). The effects on North Korean citizens are very severe because of the countrys leaders philosophy of self-reliance, and thousands of people will continue to suffer from the lack of food and other necessary items. Communism affects citizens all over the country. Thousands of people suffer from the consequences that the government has left in North Korea. There is a major gap between North Koreas medical care and other countries medical care. German physician and human rights activist Norbert Vollertsen said: Of course, the North Korean government will tell you everything is free in North Korea. Its not true because its not available. There is no medicine. There is no running water. There is even no soap in the hospitals (Inside North Korea). Since there are barely any decent medical facilities, thousands of people overcome with sickness and die a lot younger than in developed countries. Also, many thousands of people become blind because the lack of proper hospitals and the poor living conditions there. In 2006, Doctor Sanduk Ruit went into North Korea to erform one thousand surgeries on the blind. Once the surgeries were completed, the doctor and his staff began to take off the blindfolds on those who were treated. Each time a person could see, they did not thank the doctor but they walked up to a picture of Kim II Sung and thanked him (Inside North Korea). The effects on the children in North Korea are devastating. Lisa Ling, a T. V. correspondent for National Geographic, explains: The average seven year old boy is eight inches shorter and twenty-two pounds lighter than his brother in South Korea (Inside North Korea). The effects of communism are oppressive, but they do not affect all citizens. A little over three million people live in North Koreas capital city Pyongyang. Pyongyang holds most of the privileged citizens of the county. Big supporters of the government are allowed to live there (Inside North Korea). The capital city has countless amounts ot posters ot the three leaders: Kim II Sung, Kim Jong II, and Kim Jong Un. North Koreas communist government takes a huge toll on its people, but they do not complain to anyone about it or else they have risk of going to internment camps or eath. The people of North Korea worship but also fear their leaders. They rarely oppose them or else they could live in a prison camp for the rest of their lives or be killed. North Koreas citizens depend on their communist government to provide them with food and protection. The citizens have lived with oppression for decades, but many of the people do not want to change their government because they have dealt with it for so long and they are used to it. A solution that can stop communisms reign in North Korea is to wait out the rule. After North Korea loses it ommunist rule, countries around the world can work together to put in a new form of government. As soon as the communist control in the country starts to dissolve, the citizens of North Korea could start fighting the government alongside of many different world countries that want to end communism in all countries. World powers desire to end North Koreas communism because they have recently obtained nuclear weapons that they could threaten many countries with or sell them to terrorist organizations (Inside North Korea). World powers do not want to have to go to war with North Korea because of the loss of lives, the cost, the damage it auses, and many other reasons; this is why waiting out the communist reign in North Korea is the best option. This idea worked with Syria and Libya because once the countries governments started to collapse, rebels along with other countries fought to out a new government in place. If the North Korean citizens can outlast communisms control until the countrys government starts to diffuse, then the people of North Korea can fight the government with the help of a variety of countries. Communism has turned North Korea into one of the worlds most feared and hated countries. Their governments ways of ruling with a communist leash has led to extreme conditions affecting the citizens there. If anyone is reported of talking or even thinking against the regime, they will most likely die or end up living the rest of their life in prison (Inside North Korea). Because the North Korean government has taken a huge toll on its citizens, many countries around the world wish to change their form of government. If these countries along with the citizens of North Korea wait until communisms leash begins to die out, then they can help each other to inish off the devastating consequences the communist government of North Korea has had for decades.

Anywhere you look today you will see at least one Essays - Fashion
Anywhere you look today you will see at least one Essays - Fashion Anywhere you look today you will see at least one person wearing the most popular brand in the world, Nike. Nike has been around for a few decades and has taken over the world as the biggest sponsor and brand in sports. In today's world you will see that Nike has taken over the NBA by designing and rebuilding team uniforms, they have the whole golfing world covered in head to toe with their Nike designs. The company has taken over the world, but it took a lot of hard work and major marketing to do so. Starting off in 1962 Blue Ribbon Sports created their own line of high quality running shoes. They were slow in the beginning with only a limited amount of sales in its first few years. Blue Ribbon Sports redesigned and rebuilt the company adopting the name of Nike, based off the Greek Goddess of Victory. This was their first huge step in marketing, naming a company after the Goddess of Victory, showing their customers that they would win by using the product. Nike realized that branding themselves into sports would be the ticket to their success, the first endorsed Steve Prefontaine, a high level long distance runner. Prefontaine was coached by one of Nikes founders, Bill Bowerman. The attention Prefontaine brought the company made them realize that high level athletes would only get them more attention. The most famous athlete that the company ever signed is Michael Jordan. Nike signed Jordan in 1985, a rookie at the time, but he "personified superior performance"(Kotler,2016), Nikes goal of being number one was right around the corner. The first year alone, "revenues hit more than One-Hundred Million Dollars.(Kotler,2016)" Nike was on top of the world with these numbers but they knew that they had to keep pushing and create more marketing strategies to increase their revenue sales. The first Nike ad was in 1988, where they premiered the "Just Do It" campaign, which is still going strong today 29 years later. The ad "subtly challenged a generation of athletic enthusiasts to chase their goals.(Kotler,2016)" The campaign was simple in promoting consumers that instead of beating around the bush, subliminally Nike was saying that anyone can accomplish their goals, but with the help of Nike products. From starting as a small company manufacturing affordable running shoes to being on top of the athletic wear industry Nike has come a long way. With the change in the market and new companies being created to combat their sales, Nike has almost perfected their marketing strategies. Their product is known worldwide, and they have 1,142 retail stores to help with the growth of the company(Statista,2017). Not only that, but they have distributors such as Finishline, Footlocker, Footaction, Dicks, and many more selling their products. They have placed their product every single place they could think of, all with the simplest of designs on the box, a giant Swoosh sign. Placing their product on every top athlete in every sport has also increased sales in not only shoes but also apparel like hoodies, shorts, socks, wristwear. Although they are at the top of the food chain in their respective industry, they have kept their prices reasonably matched to the competitors. Nike has kept their strategy for sponsoring the most famous athletes, especially in basketball. They started with Michael Jordan, the biggest name in sports in the 1980's and 1990's. They then jumped to Kobe Bryant, the biggest name in basketball around the time that Jordan was retiring. Keeping that same motive, they signed Lebron James, who has taken over basketball, and has released many shoes with his name on them, but with Nikes baseline on them. Sponsoring the biggest athlete has been predominantly a smart decision by Nike since their initial stages. Nike has stayed true to their origins by advertising on television and sports, but that has also been a downfall for them. They have not adapted to the newest ways of advertising; social media. Social media is now the biggest form of advertising, consumers post pictures, reviews, comments, and promotions all over. The influence of one person about a product can change how an entire product or company is perceived by consumers. The biggest competition for Nike
